Thanks, Ben (& Jerry Feldman), I had come to the same conclusion, just
wanted some validation.  I'm not looking forward to the several days it will
take to get this laptop properly configured for Linux again, once I have the
new hard drive.  I'm just glad I was able to salvage (most of) the work I
had been doing.  Argh!  What a PITA!!!

BTW, if one of you on the list finds themselves in need of a floppy-based
distribution for situationa like this, I can recommend "tomsrtbt"
(http://www.toms.net/rb/), it was a no-brainer to download and install onto
a floppy, and works very well, with just about anything you'd need for an
emergency situation.
