I believe Vince has pointed out an important issue and provided a good, if not
necessary, topic for a meeting or a segment of a meeting. Especially a local
chapter meeting. The installation of Linux under most current distributions is
quite easy. However, for a person with little or no Unix experience or a solid
background in computers...such as a typical PC user or small network admin...
there is a need to understand the basics of installing and configuring
applications. While the commerical applications such as StarOffice are similar
to what is done in Windows, using RPMs, tar.gz files, compiling from source,
etc., are not. It is not all that difficult, but people need to be educated in
these areas since that is how much open source software is distributed. Along
the way, they will learn a great deal more about computers and Linux in general
which is to everyone's benefit.
Vince, you asked some questions with some rather large answers and I've taken up
my share of bandwidth. Perhaps a thread can start on the topic, but go to a
local LUG orthe GNHLUG meetings and ask away. Helping hands are always there.
