Thanks to the folks who have responded with helpful suggestions.
Here's a little more info...
It seems that the font server is hosed somehow. This happens when X tries
to start after a fresh reboot (system boots into console mode normally,
startx is what craters). When I tried cd /etc/rc.d/init.d ; ./xfs
start the font server appeared to start ok, but the startx script then
resulted in the same crash.
I'm about to grab some lunch, then I'll be trying to figure out what is
causing the problem. As always, any helpful suggestions will be gratefully
appreciated!
THANKS!
