I have a give away CD of Stormix 2000 based on Debian slink which installs
very nicely and gives me
a good looking desktop, networking, etc. I have the 3 CD set of Debian 2.2
which installs with a poor desktop and requires lots of time, I think, to
select and install all the packages of interest...and boy are there a ton of
them.
My question to the debian users is: Can I upgrade the Stormix using the
Debian CDs and not end up with hash or should I buy a book yet to be found
in the local area on Debian and start from square one?
My impression so far is that Debian has a very complete set of packages, but
the intial install is a great deal of work compared to the other
distributions in terms of getting the machine up and runing all the stuff a
typical user wants. Partially due to the control available, but still..a
nice desktop is not too much to ask. BTW, the Stormix install was very,
very good. At least equal to Caldera and Red Hat.
