I recently set a friend up with SuSE Linux 6.3 on his system... When it ran Win95 the modem worked fine as long as we installed the drivers... The modme manual (a Viking v.90 based 56k external) says that no special drivers should be needed.... and that ATZ or ATF0 or ATF1 shoulf work fine for the init. In SuSE, I have tried Kppp, wvdial, and even minicom and got similar results with all of them. the modem is connected to the second COM port, so it uses /dev/ttys1 or /dev/cua1 - same results with either. I can talk directly to the modem. The AT commands return the right values and I can get it to dial without a hitch. It dials, handshakes fine, connects fine at decent speeds, but the welcome/login screen comes up all garbled as it I were either using the wrong character set or as if the RAS was not talking 8N1... But... I *know* the RAS is talking 8N1, plain ASCII because I have checked both the config AND the manual for the RAS. (I work at the ISP it's dialling to...) and minicom verified I'm using 8N1 and vt102 emulation which shouldn't have any problems handling ascii. As a test, i tried setting minicom to ANSII, and all I got was a different set of gobblydeegook. Kppp, wvdial, and Minicom in vt102 mode all yield the same indecipherable junk. Kppp and wvdial both think this is a PPP start on the remote end and begin the local session without a login. I tried dialling in via a terminal in WinME on my laptop and the welcome/login appeared fine. The RAS is a rather active (aka, I can't realistically mess with it) Alcatel ASX running kernel 3.4.1beta (don't ask... it works fine for the other couple thousand users...). I tried dialling into a second similar box runing kernel 3.3.0 and got the exact same results. Has anyone else seen this? Anyone have any ideas what the problem might be? I'm pretty sure it's on the new Linux box's end or at least fixable on that end... thanks in advance, Brian --------------------------------------------------------------- | [EMAIL PROTECTED] Spam me and DIE! | | http://www.datasquire.net | | Co-Founder & Co-Owner of | | Data Squire Internet Services | --------------------------------------------------------------- ********************************************************** To unsubscribe from this list, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the following text in the *body* (*not* the subject line) of the letter: unsubscribe gnhlug **********************************************************
