Just noticed this, and thought it might need updating since we're now a
buncha lugs... :)

We sometimes catch a window, a glimpse of what's beyond
Was it just imagination stringing us along?

Welcome to the gnhlug mailing list!
If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list,
you can send mail to "Majordomo" with the following command
in the body of your email message:

Here's the general information for the list you've
subscribed to, in case you don't already have it:
[Last updated on: Tue Jun 6 11:56:45 2000]
This is the mailing list of the Greater New Hampshire Linux Users Group
(gnhlug for short). If you don't know what "Linux" is, see the description
at the end of this document.
We meet the first Wednesday of every month at various locations in the
greater New Hampshire area to discuss the Linux operating system. During
the summer months meetings are held in Nashua, NH; the rest of the year we
meet on the UNH campus in Durham, NH. Sometimes we creep down to Lowell,
or even join the Boston Computer Society's Linux group. That is why we
call ourselves the "*Greater* New Hampshire" Linux Users Group.
These discussions about Linux revolve around:
o uses of Linux
o administering Linux
o ports of Linux to various platforms
o new peripherals for Linux
o experiences with Linux
and anything else that the members deem important.
On occasion we may investigate other "Freeware Operating Systems" such as
FreeBSD and NetBSD, but we still have plenty to discuss about Linux.
The current GNHLUG chairman is Jerry Kubeck.
He can be reached at [EMAIL PROTECTED] .

This list operates via a Majordomo server. To add yourself to the
mailing list, send a message to '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' and in the body
of the message (not the subject line), put:
subscribe gnhlug
If you want to receive messages concerning meeting dates, installfests, and
other events, but not the day-to-day discussions, instead use a body of
subscribe gnhlug-announce
All announcements are automatically sent to the 'gnhlug' list, so there is
no need to subscribe to both.
If you wish to be able to send messages from several addresses, but only
want to receive the mailing list at one of them, send the message
subscribe gnhlug_post
from each alternate sending address. All mailing list activity should be
sent to the main mailing list, which is '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'.
Additional information about how to use majordomo can be found by sending
the message "help" to the server.
----------
That's all you have to do. Since Linux is a open system, and we are very
open people, you will be welcomed into the fold. To send mail to the
mailing list, address your message to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" and it will go
out to all our other members.
[ As of June 2000, the list boasts over 275 members. ]
============================What is Linux?====================================
Linux is a free operating system started by Linus Torvalds while at the
University of Helsinki. It is developed by Linus and a small band of
faithful lieutenants who are (in turn) helped by hundreds (well, maybe
dozens) of others.
It is a "UNIX clone", which means that it has not passed the X/Open suite
of tests to be called "UNIX" (Linus can not afford the test suite costs),
but other than that it looks and feels like UNIX.
It is a multi-user, multi-tasking, timesharing system that provides both
command-line and graphical (X11) interfaces. It supports TCP/IP, NFS, SLIP,
PPP, and a variety of other networking protocols.
Linux can now be obtained in any number of ways, in a number of 'flavors'
(called distributions). These include the purchase of CD-ROM ($3 to $80),
network download to local disks, network installation from a remote server,
and of course floppies. There is no "license" per se, so you may apply it
to as many systems as you wish.
Linux runs on a wide variety of platforms, including Intel-class (386 or
higher), Digital Alpha, MIPS, ARM, PowerPC, and SPARC. There is even a
port to the popular 3Com PalmPilot.
