i'm sure that many of you have met my girlfriend at various linux functions
and such. until sunday night she was a dedicated windows user. she wanted
to buy some t-shirts off of copyleft.net with tux on them and i told her
that she couldn't if she didn't at least run linux.....she after about 3
hours of thinking and playing with redhat 7.0 system...she said
ok......after doing some research i got drivers for her lucent win modem
and went to installing linux on her comcrap(compaq) presario 1230...
Mandrake 7.0 installed without a hitch....it detected all her odd hardware
and everything....configured sound and pcmia....got the modem
working....and everything is OK!....so far she likes windowmaker...it seems
to run the fastest on the cyrix 233 chip...it seems that she is having no
problem making the conversion...she was a 100% windows and office user (no
DOS).....she seemed VERY impressed with gimp......and was surprised with
the likeness of LICQ to the "official" client.
i just can't believe how easy it was to get her modem working....and i'll
say....in windows 98 she could only connect at my house at 33600 (i always
connect between 49333 and 52000) under linux she connects above 46000 every
time...amazing.....
i subscribed her to nnhlug and gnhlug....she'll hopefully ask
questions.......and i know that you'll all help her as you all helped me
when i started out. :-)
maybe i should write an article on how to transform your girlfriend into a
geek in 5 easy steps?
