Ben had some good comments, but I'd like to add one -

Is it possible that a web page that you're displaying is running a
Java applet that is continually sending updates back to the server
and getting more info from the server? My ISP does this - the home
page is on "myway.com" and one of the features it has presents the
current weather conditions in my home town (which also happens to
be where the POP is located). I usually hit the 'stop' button on
Netscape 4.7x to stifle it, otherwise, I can bring up the Dial-Up
Networking applet under Windows NT 4.0SP5 and watch the number of
bytes transmitted increment away. Yes, it's very annoying...
