What's the load average on your system? How about free disk space?
If the load avg > 10 (default setting), sendmail will stop working. This
number can be changed in the sendmail.mc file with a statement similar to:
dnl Add this line to raise the load average at which we begin rejecting mail
dnl This system should be fine with a load average of 50 or more
define('confREFUSE_LA',50)
If your spool directory is full, or the final destination where you deliver
mail to, this would have a similar affect.
