I prefer to separate my data out into 2 different pools:
Static - requires backups rarely if ever
Data can be recovered from CD or other install media
Dynamic - requires daily backups with regular fulldumps
For instance, we back up our NFS server every night. The only data this
system holds is stuff people absolutely need to do their work: home
directories, project development areas, etc. All non-dynamic data is located
on a separate system (though arguably, in a real small environment, it could
simply be a separate filesystem). We rarely back up the static data, since it
mostly consists of ISO images of various distros, etc.
In a previous environment we identified "static" data as anything that:
- came on it's own install media (commercial apps, etc.)
- could be downloaded off the internet and re-installed
This is still pretty much the definition here, though we don't really have
many commercial applications here.
For backup strategies, they're like standards, everyone has one :)
I prefer to perform incrementals daily and a level 0 dump once a week. Some
environments may be comfortable with monthly level 0s and incrementals
everyday. For those really interested in backup strategies, I highly recommend
getting a copy of the O'Reilly book "Backups".
