This post raises a significant issue that needs to be mentioned
explicitly. Some things cannot be backed up without special tools.
You can't back up a data base while it is online without a backup tool
that understands the physical structure of the data base and one hopes
also understands transaction boundaries.And when I say data base I'm
including any file that has pointers to stuff within the file, and any
file containing pointers (define pointer any way you'd like) to other
files. Using tar or dd just doesn't cut it if the data are changing
underneath you. One must either go offline for the duration of the
backup or use a tool that can give you an internally consistant
snapshot. And even then, the backup is only current as of when it
started, not when it finished.
With any luck, that comment was worth what it cost you...
