Well, that's true, in part. In my particular case - and the reason I
have a real low opinion of Veridont [thanks, Jeff - that's a keeper!]
is that I'm about 12k feet to the SLIC box to which the aforementioned
brand-new 200 pair cable runs. However, if I run a scan from the DSL
Reports web site, it says I'm a lot further. Why? Because Hell Atlantic
(at the time) didn't (un?)bridge my line. The twisted pair comes out
from the SLIC, up the hill, and there's a 'T' connection to the line
that goes up my driveway to the house; they left the rest of the line
going all the way out to the end down by the pond (another 7-8k feet)
hanging off of it like a giant antenna. Folks on the list familiar with
tranmission line theory are invited to cringe with me...
So, basically, I need them to fix that, upgrade the SLIC to do DSL and
update the Central Office (which is indeed another 5 miles away from
the SLIC) to do xDSL. The sad part is that we now have two telephone
exchanges in town, as the result of a FO loop from Concord through
Pittsfield, Northwood, Deerfield, Raymond, Candia, Suncook and back
to Concord. Gobs and gobs of bandwidth to be had...
As I mentioned to Maddog privately, my _perception_ is that Veridont
has been very slow to install xDSL in those few areas they claim to
have it available; I've heard lots of complaints about people having
to wait for a promised/scheduled installation, and Veridont has been
very slow to spread availability beyond those few towns/cities where
they currently offer it. Meanwhile AT&T Broadband and other cable
companies are aggressively marketing broadband/cable modems and are
working hard to meet the demand - I see a lot of AT&T contractors'
vans running around town to install stuff.
Now, if Veridont wants to prove me wrong, and actually resolve the
problems and provide me with xDSL service, terrific, because I'm one
of the few people who don't have access to broadband because of a
total lack of infrastructure. Somehow, I don't think it will happen soon.
