Hey, Ben....ANSI graphics rule!!!! Down with the web! :-)
I would love to see the GNHLUG business cards come to pass. Those would be
about the same size as the paper tags I used. Considering that you can buy
business card perforated (sp) sheets at any office supply store and run them
through your laser / ink printer, I think it's a great idea. If someone w/
a little extra bandwidth, a flair for presentation and a good grasp of
brevity wanted to put together a template card and make it available on the
GNHLUG site, some of us could download it, tweak it for our particular
office product / printer, and run off a few sheets. Spreading the effort
out across ten LUGers would be more cost effective and less burdensome than
asking one person to make a couple hundred cards themselves. Those
individuals can then do some of the distribution in their local stomping
grounds, bringing them to any meetings they attend, etc. It would also give
people who are a little less "vocal" in their advocacy a little help.
People not as comfortable discussing Linux could have a couple in their
pockets in case they get in a conversation w/ someone interested in taking
the Linux plunge. Just say "It's great...here, take a look for
yourself...", smile honestly, and hand them a GNHLUG card.
I thought about the rubber-cement option for distribution boxes but saw the
same risk as Ben and have to ask if it's "worth it." You have to glue the
cards to the package without being seen (not easy to do w/ the amount of
surveillance in today's stores) and then they have to slip by the cashier.
That last part is actually pretty easy, considering how many junk stickers
are on most computer products now days anyway. I would just hate to have
LUGers branded as trouble makers and banned from Wal-Mart because someone
saw us gluing cards on the front of RH distros in an effort to *HELP* people
("no good deed goes unpunished"). It does target the best audience (people
just getting started) but may result in creating the wrong image if it
backfires.
Anyone else have input on GNHLUG promo cards?
<side note>
The GNHLUG site is great, but what about adding a "New to Linux?" link
prominently somewhere on the home page. It can provide some original content
if people have it, but otherwise let it open a page that has links to some
of the best "starting" places for new Linux users. Many of us have our
favorite links for such things, and I'm sure we could put together ten to
twelve of the best ones.
