Well, if you're using NIS, then DNS should not be an issue, unless your 
resolver configuration is messed up.  You might want to check your
/etc/nsswitch.conf file to see how your're resolving hosts.  It should be 
something like:

        hosts:  files nis dns

if you're using NIS and want that to be the primary resolution provider for 
internal hosts.
