This is a very good point that I missed in the last email; If you have access
to one of these JetDirect cards and wish to see if it's new enough to support
lpd connections, just telnet to it. If you can connect (to the normal telnet
port, 23), the firmware is recent enough for lpd - if it refuses the
connection, it's too old.
This is a good way to tell if a used one that you're looking at is ready
for the *NIX world without hassle. Make sure there's a machine around with
a network connection that supports telent when you look at a used HP printer /
JetDirect server. Next time, I'll bring my notebook and a crossover cable.
