xinetd uses a different config file format than inetd. It has a number
of nice features, but I'm real comfortable with inetd, so I haven't
switched. xinetd is the default for RedHat 7.0 and Mandrake 7.2. I might
switch later after I've used it more.
I think of it like proftpd vs. wu-ftpd. proftpd has a lot of nice
features, a config file with apache-like syntax, better security. And I
still use wu-ftpd because I haven't taken the time to learn proftpd. (At
least in inetd's case, I feel it's fairly secure. I'm not so sure of
wu-ftpd.)
