That is an oft overlooked fact in Linux forums. Winmodems (losemodems) suck
regardless of OS. They cause crashes, lost connections, performance problems,
and all around frustration. When they work at all. Personally, I don't
*want* anyone to try and make the damn things work under Linux. They don't
work under *Windows*. The correct answer is to throw the things out and buy a
*real* modem. And complain to the company who sold it to you in the first
place.

I think you mean HSP (Host Signal Processor), not HST (High Speed Transfer).
The latter was a proprietary modem protocol created by US Robotics which
allowed asymmetric connections (e.g., upload at 1200, download at 9600).
Unless the HST acronym has been recycled at this point?

I like to call a Winmodem a "sound card pretending to be a modem".
