I wouldn't call them expensive, not by todays standards, anyway. I
have always used USR modems, and they have all worked with Linux. I
think that they are now realizing that if they advertise to multiple
audiences, then they can get more business. I think that they do
produce a Winmodem, but it costs the same as the real modems, so they
don't push it very much.

I think that part of this is the dwindeling modem market. With more
and more people going with Cable or xDSL, it's a tough market. USR
knows that if the "average" person looks at a box and it says that it
supports 10 different OS's, then they will assume that it is better.

Canon is an odd case. I have a Canon USB scanner that only supports
Win98. I e-mailed them about Linux support, and I was told that anyone
that wanted a developers kit could get one. So, I e-mailed them back
saying that I wanted one (with the intent of sending it to the SANE
developers). I was told I had to call, and was given a phone number (a
toll call, mind you!). I called, and I was transferred about 20 times.
Eventually, I got someone to talk to me, and they told me that they
don't give out the driver development kit, and if they wanted to
support other OS's, then they would do it themselves.
C-Ya,
Kenny
