I tried Coyote Linux a while back and I'd say that
if your gear is straightforward the chances are good
that the Coyote stuff will work. I could not get the
Coyote kernel to boot on my firewall (ancient 33MHz
486 EISA box with fairly cantankerous HW) so I ended
up using a stripped-down Debian release, but I came
away with the impression that the Coyote stuff is decent.
Actually, now that I've learned how to reliably get
a statically linked kernel started on my firewall box
I could theoretically use Coyote by retrofitting it
with a custom-built kernel and then using the rest
of it (and there isn't much - they're quite the
minimalists) "out of the box", but now that my firewall
is stable I'm not highly motivated to mess with it...
BTW, I've heard of some folks spewing their logging
data out the serial port of their firewall system and
collecting it on some other machine that the bad guys
can't get to. That approach, plus Coyote's minimalist
implementation and the ability to boot it from a
ReadOnly floppy makes it extremely unlikely that your
Coyote firewall can ever be cracked without leaving a
trace, or root-kitted in any way that would persist
after a reboot.
