Hi Wayne,

I'm mot intimately familiar with Compaqs, but there are three things you
need to look at (primarily:)

Look at the existing motherboard. Does it have a "riser" type backplane, ie,
ONE large slot with a riser card coming out of it that has the I/O slots on
it? If it does, you are better off just getting (or building) a new machine,
since the case will not be compatible with a "standard" ATX motherboard.

If the motherboard DOES have standard I/O slots in it, next thing to look at
is the power connector on the motherboard. Is it AT or ATX? AT connectors
have two pieces coming from the power supply, and the motherboard end has
exposed metal blades. An ATX connector is one piece on the power supply end,
and each pin is enclosed in its own little plastic shell. Either way, you'll
need to know this when you purchase a new motherboard. If it's the AT style,
you'll probably be limited on what motherboards you can get, as far as
processor type and speed.

Third, look for I/O cards in the computer (or lack thereof.) Most new
motherboards these days have NO (read zero) ISA slots in them. If you have
ISA cards in the machine, such as a modem, or and ISA network card, you'll
need to upgrade them to PCI. Also, the motherboard may have built in I/O on
it, such as the video, sound, or possibly even network adapter. If this is
the case, you'll need to purchase I/O cards for these functions, or buy a
motherboard that has them on it.

Good luck!
