I have a little network.

My smtp and pop servers are running on one of my machines at a fixed IP
address. This machine, and the associated daemons are supposed to
handle all the mail tasks on my network. My network consists of 2 linux
boxen, 1 mac and 1 airport base station running dhcp.

here's my dumb question: HOW do I configure my debian box to use the smtp
server running on my RedHat box?

Basically, i tried to run whois [domain name] | mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

but all the mail I send gets totally ***frozen*** in the mailq.

I know exim is installed, but it doesn't seem to be working...
/etc/init.d/exim start returns nothing, stop returns nothing and restart
returns nothing (i.e. all three put me back at the prompt)..

/usr/sbin/exim stop hangs, as does /usr/sbin/exim restart and
/usr/sbin/exim start...

Ideally, I'd like not to have to use the local MTA but set things up so
that anytime I pipe something to mail, it uses the MTA on the box next to
it... if possible...

if that's not possible, I'd like to get exim to behave.. looked over the
/etc/exim/exim.conf file.. but it's kinda greek to me..

any guidance appreciated!

Thanks!

J.
