Make sure APM support is compiled into the system. Look for "/proc/apm".
If not there, try "modprobe apm". If still not there, check the
configuration used to build the kernel.
Oh, BTW and FWIW, I tried the ACPI support in 2.4 on my Athlon system at
home, and that didn't work at all, so if you're trying ACPI, try APM
instead.
