Distribution-specific.

The 1024 cylinder limit is in the traditional CHS INT13 interface. If the
software in use supports the newer LBA INT13 extensions, it is not an issue.
First, ensure your BIOS supports the INT13 extensions (it almost certainly
does). If so, you have two options:
Option 1: Use Partition Magic to move the Windows 2000 partition "up",
such that you have enough space below cylinder 1024 for a Linux /boot
partition (you only need a few megabytes). Windows 2000 supports the INT13
extensions for LBA.
Option 2: Use a version of LILO that supports the IN13 extensions for LBA.
I think 0.22 or later includes those features "out of the box"; some older
versions were patched by the distro vendor for same.

I do not believe Win4Lin supports Windows 2000, although I could be wrong.
VMware does. It also lets you boot a VM from an existing partition, which
would be useful for your case. Significantly slower than Win4Lin, though.

Do *NOT* attempt to write to mount NTFS partition read/write using Linux's
NTFS support. It *WILL* cause data loss. The only question is how much.
