Looking at EPS numbers, Dell is doing better. However, as prices
continue to erode in the PC market, Compaq and HP (together or
separately) have considerable diversity in systems.
The question of what happens to Tru64 is a big one that probably only
Michael and Carly could answer today. I would hope that the resultant
OS (whether Tru64 or HP-UX ) is significantly better than HP-UX.
Probably for legacy and contract reasons Tru64 will exist for quite some
time. (Note that there are a considerable number of HP systems (former
Convex) that are still running SPUX. I don't see HP-UX ported to Alpha,
and the Alpha will be around for 10 years or so (although new
development will be ended in 3 as announced). How many years ago was
it that HP announced that PA-RISC was going away.
In any case there is a lot of stuff to be sorted out.
