The machine in question is primarily a build box -
we run various X clients (like xterm) on it but
essentially never run the server or any of those
thunder-pig apps that accumulate huge working sets
and require snappy GUI behavior. If that's what's
supposed to be broken in 2.4.x then the system in
question clearly isn't representative. I was just
trying to dispel the implication that your computer
would collapse into a bubbling pool of slag if you
were foolish enough to give 2.4.x a test drive... ;->
