It was my boss talking to the machines... I haven't seen the logs.

Yup.

But I think he figured it out: it was a buggy release of nfsd on
Solaris7.  He HUP'd it and it seemed to work.  Oddly, this bug didn't
affect 7.1 boxen at all....

Ditto.  I just wish the people who pay me had that foresight.

It is.  I'm still fond of Mandrake for general desktop use.  It's as
east to install as RedHat and more robust.  (I know, it doesn't make the
*best* servers, but it isn't all that bad either.)

I have ongoing commitments on wednesdays that happen outdoors.  When it
gets cold, those commitments go away.
