Hi all,
I just wanted to share a few comments on last Thursday night's talk
by our very own Karl Runge last night on the "Poor(est) Man's VPN".
This was quite a well-attended event, with more than 25 people
showing up. The usual crowd was there, the MCLX contingent made a
good showing, but was equally balanced by the WSI contingent, who, in
recent months has made quite a regular showing at these events.
(It no longer feels like I'm going to a company meeting :)
There were also a couple new faces in the crowd, names to which I've
already forgotten[1] !
Karl gave a great talk about many pretty neat things one can do with
SSH and using it's ability to re-direct ports between machines. He
went into common uses for these abilities, and even some not common
ones. Karl also pointed out some things that you could do, and some
you might not want to, depending upon your available bandwidth.
Karl even had some neat ideas on things you could do with Netscape to
make accessing your corporate intranet easier over an SSH tunnel.
(more than one person was heard to make exclamations of incredulity
and "Now why didn't I ever think of that!" )
I have asked Karl if we could place his slides on the web site so we
can all use them, and he has graciously agreed. I hear that our
esteemed webmaster, Charlie, found a couple of cycles of spare time,
somewhere, and the slides are already on the website, so we should
all now be able to peruse Karl's slides,
Thanks all for attending last week, and don't forget to RSVP to me
for the Holiday Gathering if you haven't done so already.[2]
[1] There's been talk about creating a "faces" database on the
GNHLUG site so that we can know "who goes with what e-mail
address". I'd be interested in seeing some discussion on this
and knowing whether or not we think this is a good idea or not
[2] Please send me personal e-mail to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] to RSVP
for the Holiday Party. Please use a Subject line like the
following:
Subject: # for Dec 12th
replacing '#' with the number of people you're RSVP'ing for.
