  You make no mention of what revisions those two kernels are.  Also, what
distro and release?  What version of the LVM, if you are not using what came
with the kernel?  What version of the LVM userland tools?

  You're not, by any chance, using Red Hat 7.x, are you?  Or something based
on it (e.g., Mandrake 8.x)?  Your symptoms match lossage that occurs when
Red Hat's broken "GCC 2.96" is used to compile the LVM tools.

  You might want to subscribe yourself to the LVM mailing list at
<www.sistina.com>.  It is fairly low volume, and I have found the developers
who hang out there to be very friendly and helpful.

  What you are trying to do should work; we have a customer with a 542 GB LV
(and ReiserFS on that) without trouble.  Red Hat 6.2 base, 2.2 kernel, LVM
1.0.
