  Hmmm, I dunno about 2.4, but on 2.2, the 3Ware driver is fully GPL and
actively maintained by 3Ware.  Alan Cox periodically syncs the driver in the
mainline kernel with the current 3Ware release.  No proprietary module is
needed.  So the differences should be little to none.

  The 3Ware management utility is binary-only, true.  In our experience, it
has always worked without trouble, regardless of kernel.

  I particularly like the feature that emails you when a disk fails.
