Two ideas:
1: Use ange-ftp. Fire up a gnuclient and type:
C-x C-f /root@somemachine:/etc/hosts
(it is possible to do this over ssh as well)
(gosh, I wonder how many other editors implement this incredibly
handy functionality...)
2: Use Kai Gro�johann's "TRAMP" package:
ftp://ls6-ftp.cs.uni-dortmund.de/pub/src/emacs/tramp.tar.gz
