At some point hitherto, Ben Boulanger hath spake thusly:
> This is an interesting project that LANL's involved with.. rather than
> try and misquote or misrepresent what it is, here's the link:

I propose that when providing links to stories, yes! Please try and
provide some background as to what the story is about. I'm sure I'm
not the only one on the list who gets hundreds of e-mails a day, many
of which consist of things like:
From: me
To: you
Subject: interesting link I found
Hey, go check this out!
http://www.somesite.com/somelink.html
This tells the reader absolutely nothing about the story, and whether
or not they might be interested in it. There are only so many hours
in the day, and only so many links one has time to follow. At least
for me, the decision to follow or not follow is based on whether the
link looks interesting. If the poster gives no description, it gets
deleted by default without a second thought. And unfortunately, in my
experience, that's most of them. [The first thought is invariably,
"gee, it would be cool if the poster would give some clue as to what
this is about. <delete>"]
[At least in this case, ben provided a vague hint as to the topic in
the subject line, but very often the poster doesn't even provide
that.]
I'm curious if others agree with this... It might be helpful to the
list to know how people feel about it. Maybe most people really don't
want a hint about the story's topic. My suspicion is otherwise
though...
Thanks
