Can you give us a clue as to how your automount config files are set up?

Also, have you looked at whether there are some homedirs which might 
be getting mapped directly vs. indirectly?  Linux automounter doesn't 
support direct maps.  If you have some homedirs getting directly 
mapped, you may notice this type of behavior.

Another thing to look at is whether the path you have specified in 
the NIS passwd file is actually correct wrt what's specified in the 
automount maps.

Try looking at the /var/[log,adm]/messages on the respective machines 
when you're trying to access the homedirs which get the error 
messages.
