It's something I've been thinking of raising on
the
Usability list for some time. Feel free to beat me
to
it :)
FWIW, it's been discussed to death before, e.g.:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/usability/2004-June/msg00074.html
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=148826
And previously:

msg00845.html
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2002-August/
msg00000.html
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/desktop-devel-list/2002-October/
msg00538.html
I'm almost afraid to ask... did anything get decided?
I'm going to diplomatically defer to Bryan and Seth on that :) They
were really the ones at the centre of that decision/discussion (and
IIRC, Seth originally wrote the part of the HIG that deals with using/
not using application names on the main menu)....
Cheeri,
Calum.
