I find once again that I "tend" to be slightly ahead of the curve...I was
using the beta 190.42 nvidia drivers & someone at the forums (ubuntu)
suggested that I revert to the "stock" 185 driver series---I have done so &
the "lag" has reduced--it is still there, but at least I can use the shell
for testing.....

I find my xsession-errors flooded with this:

I am running Gnome-Shell as a session with no other window-managers
running---I start the session with a simlink to gnome-shell.desktop.
