I cannot do what with rhythmbox? use the bottom notifications to skip songs? Yes you can... I was doing it yesterday with the latest gnome-shell packages

You cannot actually do this yet using rhythmbox; the mockups are
currently just mockups. However, this is being implemented using
extensions to the existing notification protocol, so other music players
would be able to use the same extensions to get the same functionality.
(For chat, as other people have explained, the shell integrates with the
telepathy framework, not with empathy specifically.)
