decorations'. Is that it? Looks so much like what I had in mind

I think the 'activities' mode already provides this functionality. The
down-side of it is that it takes a little more time to identify the
desired window. Titles bars don't have mush graphics so they tend to be
less challenging mentally & visually. I prefer to use the activities
mode to see what is happening on several windows at a glance -- you
know, while waiting for a process to complete.
(or mabe the dash always present and use that as a taskbar with the
previews.)
