Unity is not gnome shell. It is an Ubuntu project, and they own they copyright to all the source code. Gnome shell is the official gnome desktop, which is much better IMHO. If you don't like that, gnome classic is still available and supported. This list is for questions and concerns related to gnome shell, as well as developer help.
