Would > gsettings respect $XDG_DATA_DIRS by any chance? There's $GSETTINGS_SCHEMA_DIR. It also uses $XDG_DATA_DIRS AFAICT, but ~/.local/share isn't a system data dir, so better avoid this kind of hack that can affect other things and use the former.
