Been cursing it with you. Off hand, I suppose that the better question
is..... Why should it not be there? I mean, there is still the x in the
corner to close a window.... Now, that said.
What do you really want to accomplish when you minimize a window. There
are obvious things such as "I need to hid the current screen right now".
For that, there is no substitute. Well, send window to knew virtual
desktop may be close substitute, or simply jumping to a new virtual
desktop.
I did see two points made.
(1) There is no place to send the minimized window. I expected that they
may have shown up in the status bar (that seems to be hidden until your
cursor is in the lower right corner).
(2) You can associate some keystrokes to minimize a window. Have not
tried that yet, but, if there is no place for the icon to go, well, then
what is the point.
I fired up true crypt and then chose exit. Normally, this leaves true
crypt running (if you have a mounted partition through true crypt). I am
not really sure what happened, because it simply disappeared (rather
than showing up in the upper right corner like I suggested). At the
time, I was not aware that I could move my cursor to the lower right
corner so I did not check to see if it was there. I could not simply
minimize the window to make it go away (no minimize button). Because I
did not know how to get it back, I simply killed it after using PS to
find the process ID.
When I use TrueCrypt, I usually start it in its own VM because I cannot
get it out of the way after I start it (not been willing to make blind
guesses as to what occurs).
I would like to add a third point
(3) Based on your real need, is it a minimize that you need, or the
ability to cause a window to jump to the back. I recently noticed that a
middle click on a window causes it to jump backwards. Not sure how much,
but it is certainly no longer the top window. As long as you are not
minimizing to say prep for a screen shot, this may be a workable solution.
2. Switching between widows is PAINFUL. The options I have is: move
mouse to top-left or press the window key.
Then when the "window" view opens, and after its effects are finished,
I cannot immediatly find the window I am looking for. Why? Because of
the effects. Colors fade, windows thumbs pop and resize and rearange.
All these are too distracting and completely destroy my focus. I have
to stare for a little while at each window thumbnail to decide if it
is the one I am looking for. Also the virtual desktops bar at the
right, I have to move my mouse on top of it to see it all! Very
annoying, too many mouse moving around.
On the other hand the "applications" view is good. However I would
apppreciate smaller icons so I can fit more per row. Maybe you could
put zoom in and out handles at the bottom?
I like the ability to right click on a running application in the
Activities view to open an instance on a new Virtual Desktop.
What I would like (suggest).
Having to go to "activities" to manage my windows is a disaster.
I find it useful for some things, but, it is certainly true that it
always takes me longer to start an application than I used to. I even
tried that entire enter some key strokes and type the first few letters
of what you want to do. No joy there. Not sure what it checks to find
things, but, it was a failure for me. For now I take the cumbersome path
to get to the menus.
Window management should be "always on"! That means the dock and the
virtual desktop bar should be visible by default on my plain old
desktop. Also when windows overlap them they should pop up when moving
the mouse to the left or right screen edge. This is similar to the
current top-left edge but with much less mouse moving. At any case I
would like to NOT have any kind of resizing, rearanging of my windows
when the dock becomes active. In practise I am suggesting to have the
"window" view functionality as the default desktop!
That would leave the "activities" only with one view, the
"applications" and think about it. It makes sense and maps much better
to the Gnome 2 design.
