I found some references to widgets on this page:
https://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Design/Whiteboards/Gizmos But it seems
there are no plans to integrate widgets in the Gnome Shell experience.

Recent gnome-shell design mockups of the activitiies overview show a special
"workspace" on thee top of the workspace sidebar to be eventually used for
a "Finding and Reminding"-related functinonality (this is my interpretations
from the mockup). Maybe there could be a special "workspace" for widgets too
(something like Mac OS Lion Dashboard). Just an idea. :)
