Ah! obviously my distribution of choice (SolusOS v1.3) is very much out of date in the list of programs available. I downloaded v3.8 of gNote but when I went to install there were so many missing dependencies that I gave up after installing some of them, as one appeared to depend on another and yet another and so on it went on!. Fortunately, the version I have works. So I'll stick with it.
