Tied notes

Can someone help me on the following problem?

I have LilyPond 1.0.18.uu2 installed on a machine running Linux 2.0.36.

While tyed notes (for exampe: c'2 ~ c'2) are compiled correctly in the
.tex file (and correctly displayed in the .dvi file), when I play the
.midi file (for example by means of timidity) the are played as two
untied notes.
