Yes. I personally would find it easiest to set the stemLength of the
first and last note of the beam. That's easy to visualize looking at
the Mudela, and is independent of note spacing e.g. where is the
center of the beam of [a32 a a a a8 a]?

stemLength as a standard property (not 'read-once') is consistent
with the rest of Lily e.g. forceHorizontalShift, noteHeadStyle,
fontSize ... for all of which I use in effect a 'restore-to-default'
macro. It's obvious when you miss one :-)
