Certainly! This was actually implemented in an early version of
Lilypond, but was removed later. One problem of your suggestion
is to know if you want triplets of three 16:th, three 8:th or 
three quarternotes, for example. In the current version, 
you have to indicate each separate xxplet group with a separate
\times block. If you set the tupletVisibility to get rid of 
brackets and numbers, then you could use a single \times for the
whole section of music.
