Lilypond newbie question

Hi,
I've just tried typesetting the example in the PS manual.  It work fine, except
that eigth notes did not have bars and were printed as quarter notes.  I tried
overriding the automatic beaming by surrounding the eigth notes with [ ] but
that didn't work.  I had the score sent to a midi file and the eigth notes were
correctly transcribed in the midi.  Any help is appreciated.
