Thanks to Mats and Jan for your patience, it was my mistake.
I understood what I had done wrong :
I was using bash to create the dvi, but then I was using windows (double click)
to
view the dvi and of course - as always when testing, the environment variables
pointed
to different versions ;-) hence the mess.

I am now all clear and can view the dvi correctly, as produced by ly2dvi
1.3.39.jbr1.

Now real lily stuff :
  sol4.^\ff | do'4.\>\! r4 sol8^\f
Or translated into danish/dutch/english
  g4.^\ff | c'4.\>\! r4 g8^\f
Gives me the ff and f below the staff, where as all others are above in the
score. Also the decrescendo is below and I dunnot how to get it on top.

May I re-submit my frenglish.ly (hopefully for inclusion in some future
release), this version is now 1.3.39 compatible, rather than 1.2.0 compatible.

I could not find the breathing marks notation in lilypond.ps, can anyone point
me in the right direction ?
Should I just use text marks and in particular a comma, or is there something
specifically for breathing marks ?

Regards,
Alain.
