neat! i toned down the cello, which was overpowering my flutes.

jan> Yes, but it's quite crude.
hey, but it works! i thought \tempo could only be used in the
\midi {} block.
http://www4.smart.net/~jcovey/scores/haydn/london-trio-02/london-trio-02.midi
now has an allegro ending. yay!

jan> Hmm, you can select the font style; maybe adding a

that seems very un-mudela. it's relying on the user to set the text
style and adjust the spacing of the text in relation to what's around
it (the "Allegro" in my score is engraved on top of a note head.)
han-wen: don't your engraving books set standards for the style and
positioning of tempo markings? this is something that should have a
special command, not just be set like any other text, especially if
midi tempo changes are to be coupled to the tempo markings.
(otherwise, what are you going to do? check each text passage for
"presto" and "andante"?)
\tempo is already taken. pick your own name, but for the sake of
argument, let's call what i'm thinking of "tempotext". i think we
need something like:
\tempotext "Allegro";
\tempotext "Not too fast";
\tempotext "Andante (8=120)";
that "8" would be replaced with the image of an eighth note. perhaps
any number found on the left side of an equals mark could be changed
to a note unless escaped like \8? hmmmmmm... but there's also
"[quarter symbol] = [eighth symbol]" to consider. perhaps some way of
marking numbers to be translated into symbols? "{4}={8}" or
something.
the text would have to be processable by tex, so any language could be
supported.
the midi generator could then just watch for \tempotexts that it
recognizes. \tempo could always take precedence over \tempotext so
the user could change the tempo if she doesn't like the default.
