Ah! clever remark. I forgot to take the extent of the left note-head
into account.

I cleaned up the general design of the code, and did some wild guesses
about how the code should behave, shapewise.  What's interesting is
that I actually decreased the flatness of the ties (or, more
precisely, the height of long ties).  I'll have a look after I fix the
tie-direction bug.
