i played with this a bit, then it dawned on me that what i actually
wanted was just to write these as grace notes.  it's working:

with a couple of exceptions:  lily complains that it can't find both
ends of the slur now, and the slur is engraved on top of the first
note and stretches past the last note.  secondly, "ad. lib."  should
be over the first grace note, but is instead engraved on top of the
note after the graces.  how can i fix both of these?

are you sure?  it's a standard symbol, and people will want it.  they
shouldn't have to resort to tex tricks to get it.
