Thanks for 1.3.84, it fixes just about all the problems I had with
earlier versions. I tried to the suggestion of 

      \pushproperty #' (basicStemProperties)
        #' default-neutral-direction #-1    
%      \stemdown
%      \slurup
      d4.(^"\bf Tranquillo"-\p e8 fs4 )d |

To adjust the stems, but it doesn't work...
